7 Reasons to take up running for beginners!

People often ask me, why running? There are so many reasons why this is such a great sport. It’s really accessible and doesn’t require a bit upfront investment in kit and pricey gym memberships. Having said that, if you’re considering signing up to a couch to 5k program, I beg you to purchase a decent pair of running trainers. Once you’ve got those, you’re ready to lace-up and hit the road. You’ll be amazed at where running can take you.

Here are seven more benefits of running:

1. Running makes you happy!

Particularly when combined with meditation.

3. Running gives your brain a boost and improves your memory
Yes, runners get promoted and do better in exams.

4. Running has LOADS of physiological benefits
Running helps your heart, lowers your blood pressure and, contrary to popular belief, it doesn’t destroy your knees – it strengthens them.

5. Running can reduce the risk of cancer
Yup – according to the National Cancer Institute in the US "there is convincing evidence that physical activity is associated with a reduced risk of cancers of the colon and breast. Several studies also have reported links between physical activity and a reduced risk of cancers of the prostate, lung, and lining of the uterus (endometrial cancer)."

6. Make new friends!
If reasons 1 to 5 didn’t convince you to pull on your trainers and give running a go, it’s a really sociable sport. Running groups are a great way to meet like-minded people. And there’s always brunch or coffee and cake after a Sunday group run – it’s the law.

7. Did I mention the medals?
It’s a great feeling, crossing a finish line after a dedicated block of training and a race where you’ve duked it out with the course, your body and your mind. But then they put a cool, weighty medal round your neck and life couldn’t get any better!
